Addis Ababa, March 15, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives, Shitaye Minale said Ethiopia has given prime attention to promotion and protection of human rights .She said the government has been striving to ensure human rights and prevent violation of human rights.
Shitaye was speaking here on Monday at a national consultative workshop on devising a road map for the development of a national plan of action for the promotion and protection of human rights.
The deputy speaker said one third of the country's constitution comprises issues of democracy and human rights, which she said plays main role in the efforts to ensure the rights of citizens.
She said utmost efforts are underway to ensure democratic and human rights of citizens enshrined in the constitution through drafting appropriate policies.
Shitaye said encouraging development is being registered through drafting and implementing sound development policy.
She said infrastructure development is being carried out to ensure economic, social and cultural rights of citizens.
A lot has been done to put in place policies and legal frameworks to ensure democratic and human rights of citizens in the country, she said.
Chief Commissioner, Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Ambassador Tiruneh Zena on his part said Ethiopia is undertaking activities to draft human rights plans of action.
Ambassador Tiruneh said the workshop is aimed at ensuring human rights and preparing human rights plans of action.
Regional Representative, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Regional Office for Eastern Africa, Frej Fenniche on the occasion lauded Ethiopia's efforts to draft human rights plans of action.
The representative said the UN human rights council propsed Ethiopia to draft human rights plans of action in 2009.
The session enables to realize the plan.
The workshop was jointly organized by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and Human Rights Regional Office for Eastern Africa Commission.
