Addis Ababa, March 12, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR), Shitaye Minale reiterated that the Ethiopian government has been undertaking wide-ranging activities toward ensuring the constitutional rights and benefits of women.Shitaye said the government in collaboration with pertinent bodies has been undertaking multifaceted activities toward enabling women actively take part in the overall development endeavors as well as enable them benefit best from the fruits of development.
The deputy speaker made the statement here on Friday while speaking at an event, which is organized by the HPR, in connection with the “International Women’s Day.
She said the government designed and has begun implementing various policies and strategies as well as women development package in a bid to ensure gender equality across the nation. Hence, she said, tangible achievements have been witnessed in the country in ensuring the rights and benefits of women during the last few years.
According to the deputy speaker, lots of activities have been launched toward abolishing harmful traditional practices that are contrary to women’s rights besides as well as in curbing violence against women.
The event attracted members of the parliament including the Speaker of the HPR, Ambassador Teshome Toga, pertinent bodies, and other invited guests.
