Committee lauds ELLPI's effort to address lack of professionals in leather industry
Addis Ababa, March 12, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - Trade and Industry Affairs of Standing Committee of the House of Peoples Representatives lauds the efforts of the Ethiopian Leather and Leather Products Institute (ELLPI) to address the acute shortage of professionals in the sector.

Reviewing ELLPI's five years performance, the committee said the institute has trained proffessionals through short term to first degree level program.

The committee urged the institute to focus research and extension works in the sector.

ELLPI Director General, Wondu Legesse said the institute so far trained 1225 trainees in certificate and diploma level in leather production, shoe and other leather wears.

He said ELLPI has also trained 30 students in leather production technology for first degree program.

Exporters with the support they get from the institute are earning up to 100 million USD a year , he said and adding the institute envisages earning 500 million USD in the coming five years.

He said the institute has planned to increase its export amount to 39 million leather products in the report period from 16 million at present.
