President urges Red Cross, Red Crescent further link humanitarian activities with poverty reduction
Addis Ababa, May 7, 2009 (Addis Ababa) - President Girma Woldegiorgis urged the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies to strengthen efforts to link humanitarian activities with poverty alleviation programs in Ethiopia.

The president made the statement here on Thursday in connection with World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2009, due to be marked on Friday, May 8, 2009.

The president said the effort made by the societies to attach humanitarian activities with poverty alleviation programs should further be strengthened.

President Girma, who is also patron of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), said ERCS has been undertaking encouraging activities to support efforts of the government towards sustainable development.

He said World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is being marked across the world to remember victims of natural and social catastrophes, he said.

Marking of the day also helps in finding ways to minimize the suffering of victims and to ensure their future security, he added.

This year's anniversary being marked under the theme “Our World. Your Move” will help stimulate members, supporters and donors to have common spirit under the banner of the societies.

Beyond its efforts to provide emergency services in drought, flood and other natural and man-made calamities, ERCS is engaged in activities to help people rehabilitate and establish sustainable livelihood, he said.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2009 is being marked by over 100 million members and supporters in 187 countries of the world.

Ethiopia marks the day for 74th time.
