Addis Ababa, December 18, 2009 (Addis Ababa) - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the global warming should be limited to 2 degree centigrade level. The proposal submitted to the conference by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was accepted by most negotiators. The climate deal continued in closed session in the presence of over 100 heads of state and government including US President, Barrack Obama and Chinese President.
Leaders of 14 countries, representatives of G-77 and European Union delivered speeches at the conference.
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was among the leaders who delivered speeches at the Copenhagen Climate Conference.
Meles said on the occasion that Africa's demand for financial assistance at the conference in damage it suffers from climate change is legitimate and appropriate.
He also underlined that it is the position of Africa that global warming should be limited to 2 degree centigrade level. Meles noted in this regard that a mechanism should be introduced to control the level of green house gas emissions.
Meles who describes climate change as the number one threat to the planet Earth in the 21st century, should be addressed on time. Disagreeing on the deal on climate should not be considered as alternate way, Meles added.
Chinese President said on his part that the world is eagerly awaiting the result of the Copenhagen Climate Conference. He said China would do everything possible to address the problem of climate change.
Obama said on his part that “… it is better for us to act than talk”.
The 11-day UN Climate Change Conference is expected to be concluded on Friday.
Though various proposals have been forwarded by different quarters, none of them got attention that much as that of presented by Africa.
Donor organizations including European Union responded positively.
