Addis Ababa, April 22, 2009 (Addis Ababa) -Reeb-Mesena irrigation dam construction, which the government has launched at a cost of 1.4 billion birr is well underway, the ministry of water resource said on Wednesday. The dam, which is being constructed on the river locally known as Reeb-Mesena in South Gondar zone has a capacity of holding 234 million cubic meter water, the ministry told ENA.
The ministry said the dam would enable farmers to cultivate up to 20,000 hectares of land for the benefit of over 40,000 farmers in Fogera and Libo-kemkem woredas, South Gondar zone of Amhara state.
State minister of water resource, Adugna Jebessa has recently paid a visit to the irrigation project, according to the ministry.
After the visit the state minister called up on all stakeholders to work towards successful completion of the project.
The minister also consulted with project officials about the project's next activities, according to the ministry.
