Committee urges Ministry to further augment efforts in addressing health problems
Addis Ababa, May 13, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Social Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peoples Representatives (HPR) urged the Ministry of Health to further enhance its encouraging efforts in expanding health services across the country.

While hearing the nine-month performance report of the Ministry, In its regular session held here on Tuesday, Committee Chairman Azeb Mesfin said the activities of being made in the areas of health are bearing fruits.

The efforts being made by the Ministry particularly in distribution of medicines, prevention and control of malaria and HIV/AIDS as well as in maternal and child health care would help improve its service.

She urged the Ministry to continue its efforts to expand health extension services in pastoralist areas in a strengthened manner.

The Ministry should also strive to further shore up health extension package in urban areas, as it did in rural areas.

In his report about the activities of the Ministry, Health Minister, Dr. Tewodros Adhanom said the Ministry has been striving to address basic health service problems to all citizens by strengthening health development program.

The Ministry has attached due attention to the prevention of communicable diseases such HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis, among others.

Immense activities have been executed in areas of expanding health posts, health stations and improving the services of hospital.

More than 24,500 health extension workers were trained and deployed to various places.

The Minister presented detailed reports on the training being provided to produce trained health professionals and various activities executed in the sector.
