OCFCU establishing coffee washing, laboratory company
Addis Ababa, May 13, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union /OCFCU/ has been establishing a coffee semi processing company at a cost of 20 million Birr to further improve the quality of coffee.

The company will go fully operational next year, according to union’s publication circulated at the 20th Annual Conference of Specialty Coffee Association of America held in Minneapolis recently.

The company will have coffee washing facility and laboratory to distinguish coffee origins of and test.

The construction of the company will enable members of the union to attach due attention to produce quality coffee.

Meanwhile, the union has announced that it has been executing various development projects in coffee growing areas in the state at a cost of eight million Birr secured from fair coffee trade.

It has been executing 40 projects including education and safe water facilities.

Furthermore, the union has also been offering training to coffee growers on ways of producing quality coffee.

The union enabled coffee growers in Oromia State to nurture 60 million coffee seedlings annually to ensure sustainable coffee development.

OCFCU is a small holder coffee growers owned cooperative union established in June 1999 by 34 cooperatives with a membership of 22,503 farmers.

The union has 129 cooperatives embracing 128,361 household with 800,000 family members.
