Addis Ababa, July 22, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The Addis Ababa City Islamic Affairs Supreme Council on Sunday laid cornerstone for the construction of two five-storey buildings and a mosque at a cost of 30 million Birr.The council inaugurated the same day a new headquarters constructed in Keble 11 of the Kolfe-keranio Sub-city of the metropolis.
Putting the cornerstone and inaugurating the new building, council chairman Haji Umer Edris said Muslims were not free to promote their region during former dictatorial regimes.
The chairman said Muslim communities are able to organize themselves and carry out various development activities since the constitution grants religious freedom across the nation.
The construction of the buildings and the mosque would contribute a lot to the Muslim community to practice their religion.
Council Executive Secretary, Haji Mohammed Awol on his part said the construction of the buildings would be launched in Sep 2007 on 9,000 sq. meter area of land.
The construction of the two buildings and the mosque would be finalized in 2000 E.C, he said, adding the buildings would comprise shops, supermarkets, schools, and halls, among others.
Council General Manager, Haji Ahmed Emano said Muslims should contribute share toward finalizing the construction of the buildings.
He said the Ethiopian millennium celebration would create a good opportunity to the Muslim community to contribute share in the development of the country.
