Algiers, July 22, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Ethiopian runner Mestawet Tufa took an easy win and snatched the gold in the women's 10,000 meters at the ninth All Africa Games on Saturday afternoon by clocking 31 minutes and 26.05 seconds, Xinhua reported from Algiers.
Mestawet, born in 1983, led the entire competition and crossed the finish line 5.13 seconds ahead of the runner-up Edith Masai of Kenya, who finished the distance with 31 minutes and 31.18 seconds.
Tufa's teammate Irene Kwambai won the bronze by clocking 31 minutes and 36.78 seconds.
Tufa's personal best record was 31 minutes and 00.27 second, which she created in Valkenswaard of Netherlands in June this year.
Ethiopia, an athletics power in Africa, has gained upper hand against its archrival Kenya in recent years over this women's event.
Ethiopian runners had snatched the golds of this event both in 1999 and 2003 at the quadrennial All Africa Games.
